Chen Pengnian (961-1017 CE), a noted civil servant and scholar, was a key contributor to Guangyun, a reference book on Chinese phonology that remains an authoritative text for scholars today.

The 11th century Chinese court history document Rulin Gongyi had this to say about Chen Pengnian: "... people of his time saw him as a nine-tail fox."
